The most talked about topic in golf in 2010 will be the change to the grooves on irons and wedges (after the Tiger story has run its course) so what are the new rules and how will it affect you.
The game’s rule-makers – the R&A based in St Andrews, Scotland – has confirmed that it plans to introduce new regulations for golf equipment ‘designed to enhance the benefits of accuracy by making playing from the rough a more challenging prospect in future.’
The new rules will limit groove volume as well as groove edge sharpness and means less spin will be generated when playing shots from the rough.
Initially, only professional players competing in worldwide Tours, including the European and US Tours will be affected by the new Rules (effective from January 2010), which relate to clubface grooves on clubs with 25 or more degrees of loft. But from 2014 elite amateurs and other professionals will also be subject to the restrictions.
It will be 2024 – a further 10 years – before club golfers are affected.
The R&A says” the new Rules are the culmination of an extensive collaborative research project between themselves and the United States Golf Association which identified that modern groove configurations can allow players to generate almost as much spin from the rough as from the fairway, reducing the value of accuracy with the driver.”
